If you listened to any amount of FM (or AM) radio between 1978 and 1986, you heard 5-time Grammy award winning Michael McDonald just about all the time. Besides his run with The Doobie Brothers and putting out his own records, he sang background vocals on just about everybody else’s record at the time. And apparently McDonald’s bi-annual royalty checks for publishing are hefty, too, since he co-wrote many songs, including Van Halen’s “I’ll Wait” from their 1984 album, among others.
Here’s a short-list of some of the great records that Michael contributed to. And just to pull McDonald out from the background vocal booth, we’ve listed mostly live videos.
Let’s get right to “Peg” by Steely Dan. Michael McDonald sang on so many Steely Dan records that this almost doesn’t count since he was pretty much an honorary member of the band – a band that really only had two actual members… But, it’s too good not to list, …first.
